German gambling operators see FIFA World Cup 2026 as “stress test” for regulated market

Germany’s regulated sportsbooks, represented by the Deutscher Sportwettenverband (DSWV), are concerned that the 2026 FIFA World Cup could expose weaknesses in the country’s gambling framework. The trade body warns that over a third of World Cup bets may flow to unlicensed operators. It has renewed its call for lawmakers to amend the Interstate Treaty on Gambling (GlüStV) to address these perceived flaws. The DSWV views the upcoming tournament as a critical test for the regulated market.
