Online Casinos in British Columbia: PlayNow, BCLC and Your Options

Last checked: June 2026

British Columbia was a Canadian online-gambling pioneer — its government site, PlayNow, launched in 2004 as one of North America’s first legal regulated platforms. BC has not yet opened to private operators the way Ontario has, so the legal landscape for BC players is simpler but narrower.

PlayNow and the BCLC

The British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) runs PlayNow.com, the only online casino and sportsbook legally operated within the province. It is government-backed, with regulated games, provincial responsible-gambling tools (GameSense) and local accountability. For a BC resident, PlayNow is the only site overseen by a BC authority.

Offshore casinos and the grey area

Many BC players also use internationally licensed casinos. These are not licensed in British Columbia and operate in a legal grey area: it is the operators, not individual players, that the framework targets, but there is no BC regulator to turn to if something goes wrong. If you use one, the recognised-licence, fair-terms and proven-payout checks matter even more than usual.

  • PlayNow: provincially regulated, GameSense tools, funds and disputes handled under BC oversight.
  • Offshore brands: wider game and bonus choice, but no provincial consumer-protection backstop.
  • Winnings: recreational gambling winnings are generally tax-free in Canada.

Will BC open up like Ontario?

With Ontario’s market established and Alberta legislating its own, pressure is building for other provinces to consider regulated private markets. BC has not committed to that model, so for now PlayNow remains the single provincially regulated option. We will update this guide if BC’s position changes.

The capybara take

If you want a regulated, locally accountable site, PlayNow is BC’s answer. If you choose an offshore casino for its range, treat it like any international operator: verify the licence, read the bonus terms, and test a small withdrawal first.
