Getting the Most From Free Spins: RTP, Bet Size and Volatility

Last checked: June 2026

Two free-spins offers with the same spin count can be worth very different amounts, because the slot the casino assigns — and its mechanics — determine what those spins are actually likely to return.

RTP sets the long-run baseline

Return-to-player (RTP) is the percentage a slot pays back over millions of spins. A slot at 96.5% RTP is mathematically better value for free spins than one at 92%. Casinos often assign spins to a specific title, so check that slot’s RTP on the provider’s site before assuming the offer is generous.

Fixed spin value

Free spins almost always carry a fixed bet value (often the slot minimum, like £0.10), regardless of the slot’s normal bet range. Total theoretical value = spins × spin value × RTP. Use this to compare offers on a like-for-like basis.

Volatility shapes the experience

High-volatility slots pay rarely but large; low-volatility slots pay small and often. With a capped number of free spins, high volatility means most sessions return little but a rare session can hit the win cap. Low volatility produces steadier, smaller returns. Neither is “better” — it depends on whether the offer has a win cap.

Win caps interact with volatility

If the offer caps winnings, a low-volatility slot is unlikely to reach the cap, while a high-volatility slot has a small chance of hitting it. If there is no cap, the maths is neutral and you simply ride the variance.

Practical checklist

  • Look up the assigned slot’s RTP — avoid sub-95% where you have a choice.
  • Note the fixed spin value to calculate total stake.
  • Match volatility to whether a win cap exists.
  • Check wagering on winnings before you spin.
