Slot Bonus Features Explained: Wilds, Scatters, Free Spins and Multipliers

Last checked: June 2026

Modern slots earn most of their big wins inside bonus features, not the base game. Knowing what each mechanic does helps you understand a slot’s potential before you play — and read its paytable with confidence.

Wilds

A wild substitutes for other symbols to complete winning lines. Variants include expanding wilds (fill a reel), sticky wilds (stay for several spins), and walking wilds (move across reels). Wilds are the most common win-booster.

Scatters

Scatters pay regardless of position and usually trigger the bonus round. Landing three or more scatters typically launches free spins. Unlike line symbols, they do not need to be adjacent.

Free spins

The headline feature on most slots. Free spins often come with enhancements — extra wilds, multipliers, or expanding symbols — that make them far more valuable than base-game spins. Retriggers can extend them.

Multipliers

Multipliers multiply a win (2x, 3x, up to huge values in some games). They are most powerful inside free spins, where they can compound spin to spin. Big max-win slots usually rely on stacking multipliers.

Buy features and Megaways

Some slots let you “buy” the bonus round directly for a multiple of your bet — convenient but high-variance and banned in some regulated markets. Megaways slots change the number of symbols per reel each spin, creating thousands of variable paylines. Both increase volatility.

Reading a paytable

Before betting real money, open the paytable: it lists every feature, how it triggers, and the max win. A slot’s personality lives in its features — the base game is just the setup.
